What is the format for Discover?
Discover! Elementary curriculum is presented in a worktext format. There are two worktexts (A & B) for each grade level. An easy-to-follow instructor guide filled with conversation starters, creative ideas, and a variety of ways for students to show what they know is also provided.
If you choose the Blended learning courses, students also gain access to an online learning experience that drives the learning process with fun characters, interactive activities, and pacing to direct students back to the worktext or instructor when needed. Access to the blended environment is available through Edovate’s proprietary learning management system.
What instructional approach does Discover! use?
Discover! utilizes a conversational approach that incorporates storytelling, problem-solving, and student voice. The elementary curriculum appeals to learners who enjoy situated learning and imagine themselves solving problems in a variety of settings and situations!
Does Discover! allow my student to work on his or her own?
Discover! believes that lifelong learners are those who take charge of their learning experience. Therefore, every course is designed to build self-directed learners who share their ideas, learning, and insight throughout the learning process.
In order to lay the foundation for independent learning, Discover! elementary curriculum is written using developmentally appropriate language and content. While designed for 1:1 instruction, one of the goals of Discover! is to help students master skills and then apply them to real-life scenarios. While the earliest grades may need more instructor-to-learner interaction, the upper elementary grades’ curriculum encourages students to be more self-reliant!
If I am using this curriculum, what will a day/lesson look like?
Each Discover! lesson begins with a scenario, story, or problem to solve, designed to grab student interest and help them connect learning to real life. This approach quickly engages students and helps them to identify the “Why?” behind everything they learn. Lessons are designed to be completed in two sessions or two days. However, there is also freedom and additional content built into the instructor guides should students want to dig deeper or expand a lesson. We often suggest completing the first three pages of the lesson in the worktext (along with accompanying digital content) on Day One and completing the lesson the next day (Day Two).
The instructor guides and digital content provide ideas and options for enrichment, deeper learning, and remediation. Parents can add these at any time within the lesson or structure each lesson to leverage this additional content on Day Three.
What types of assessments does Discover! use to check student progress and understanding?
Discover! provides you with lots of choice when it comes to assessments. Each learner is different and each family has different needs, so every Discover! chapter assessment has both a traditional assessment (typical quiz or test) and a performance-based assessment (project, essay, compilation, etc). Additionally, in Discover! Science, much of the informal assessment occurs while completing experiments and labs. There are also opportunities for discussion, questioning, reflection, and practice throughout each lesson.
What tools does Discover! provide for homeschooling parents?
Discover! provides a truly comprehensive instructor guide that makes it easy for parents to know what to do each day and includes answer keys, scripted language when needed, and a variety of enrichment/remediation suggestions. Parents can pick and choose what fits their child and their preferred homeschooling approach.
All Discover! texts and online activities are also highly engaging and designed to allow students to work independently, freeing parents to become a partner in the learning process rather than a director of learning.
